Blinken’s announcement about the winner in Venezuela is an “excess,” says AMLO

Mexico City. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described as an “excess” the announcement by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken that he recognized the opposition candidate as the winner of the election in Venezuela.

“With all due respect, what the State Department did yesterday was excessive (…) that is not their responsibility, they are overstepping their boundaries, that does not help peaceful coexistence in harmony among nations, it has nothing to do with the policy that was invented to avoid confrontation and war.”

In a morning press conference, where he highlighted that yesterday in his conversation with the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and Brazil, Luis Ignacio Lula Da Silva, the call to not fall into violence and to wait for the official results of the electoral process in the South American nation was privileged, he said: “Where is the law, what does international law say on this matter, what is its basis, who authorizes you to pronounce in favor of a candidate if the minutes have not yet appeared?”

López Obrador issued a “respectful call to all governments to ensure that there is no interventionism. No government is authorized, it is not legal, it is not legitimate, to issue a ruling declaring a candidate from another country the winner or the loser. What is that? If there is no world government, that is not consistent with democracy or with respect for the independence, freedom and sovereignty of the people.”
