148 ancient tombs were found in Guangzhou Zoo in one year

/Pogled.info/ A total of 148 graves from different periods were excavated at the zoo in the city of Guangzhou, located in the southern Chinese province of Gunadong, between April and July this year, said Municipal Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archeology in the city named.

Among them, there are 4 tombs from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD), 8 tombs from the Jin and Southern Dynasties (265-589), 15 tombs from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and 121 tombs from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911).

196 pieces of clay, porcelain, bronze, jade, beads and other cultural relics were found.

Chen Hao, an official at the institute, said that the graves found this time were very densely distributed. They date back to the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC – AD 25) to the early days of the founding of New China, which lasted more than 2,100 years.

The most important finds from these archaeological excavations are an almost intact tomb from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) and a well-preserved tomb from the Southern Kingdom (420-589). The Tomb of the Eastern Jing Dynasty is the largest and best preserved tomb of the period discovered so far in Guangzhou.

“The discovery of these two tombs is of great importance for the study of tomb forms, stages and burial practices during the Six Dynasties (222-589) period in Guangzhou, as well as construction technology during the Jin and Southern Dynasties”, Chen added.

Guangzhou Zoo is located in one of the main burial grounds for ancient tombs in the region. Since 1956, with the construction of the zoo, the Guangzhou Department of Cultural Remembrance has excavated nearly 500 ancient tombs at more than 30 sites in the zoo.
