Russia has started an “anti-terrorist operation” in its three border regions in Belgorod, Bryansk and Kursk, reports the news website AFP. The launch of the operations is a reaction to Ukraine’s attack on Russian soil, which is the country’s biggest countermeasure since Russia invaded Ukraine two and a half years ago.

Russia has sent, among other things, crew, tanks and rocket launchers to the areas. The country’s National Counter-Terrorism Committee said on Friday night it was launching an operation to protect civilians and “reduce the threat of terrorist acts by enemy sabotage groups”. The Russian authorities refer to Ukraine’s actions as a “terrorist attack”, accusing Kyiv of injuring civilians and destroying residential buildings.

According to the Kyiv Independent, Russia has had to evacuate the civilian population from the area, and has restricted the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, among other things.

According to the video footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Saturday, the country has fired at Ukrainian positions in Kursk and managed to shoot down 26 Ukrainian drones that tried to attack the area at night.

Ukrainian forces attacked the Kursk region on Russia’s western border on Tuesday, advancing several kilometers. The country’s authorities have been silent about the operation. The United States says it was not informed of the counterattack in advance.
