We have a wide range of missions this week in rocket launches including launches from Rocket Lab, SpaceX, Roscosmos, and ISRO. One of the most exciting missions this week was SpaceX’s mission to launch two satellites for Space Norway as part of the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM). These satellites will provide stable broadband connectivity across the Arctic and high latitude regions that are underserved by satellite broadband services.

Sunday, August 11

  • What: An electronic rocket
  • When: At 11:15 UTC
  • Where: Mahia, New Zealand
  • Why: Rocket Lab will use an Electron rocket to launch the third satellite in the Acadia Capella Space series called Acadia 3. The mission is called “Full Sky SAR” according to the nature of the satellite, which is a Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite ( SAR). The constellation will have 30 satellites and will be used to take pictures of the Earth.

  • Where: California, United States
  • Why: SpaceX will use the Falcon 9 to launch two satellites for Space Norway as part of the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM). The satellites will be placed in special orbits that will keep them above the Arctic so that they can provide services for longer periods. These ASBM satellites will provide stable broadband coverage over the Arctic and high latitude regions.

  • Why: Rocosmos, the Russian space agency, will launch the Soyuz 2.1a rocket carrying the 89th Progress cargo delivery mission to the International Space Station to ensure that those in need have everything they need on board.

  • WHO: Indonesia: : ISRO
  • What: Indonesia: SSLV
  • When: At 03:47 UTC
  • Where: Dhawan Space Centre, India
  • Why: ISRO, India’s space agency, to launch an SSLV rocket on its third development flight; the mission is called SSLV-03. The mission will put the EOS 8 Earth observation satellite into orbit. Secondary payloads to CubeSats Space Rickshaw and IITMSat. BlackSky was to introduce its satellite but withdrew and XPoSat moved its satellite to another launch.

Summary

  • The first mission we got last week was the Starlink mission. SpaceX used a Falcon 9 to launch 23 Startlink satellites (Starlink-184 / Starlink Group 11-1) into orbit from California, USA. The first stage of the rocket landed on an unmanned ship in the Pacific Ocean.

  • The second mission this week was another Falcon 9 launch, but this time carrying the Cygnus spacecraft to the ISS carrying 3,720 kilograms of supplies to ensure that everything ‘ required the astronauts. The first stage of the Falcon 9 is landing for reuse.

  • The last launch we saw was the Long March 6A in China that carried the first group of 18 Polar Orbit SpaceSail satellites from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in China. These satellites will provide broadband internet services across the globe.
