Shock in Palestinian territories over death of Hamas leader

FGaza border. The death of Hamas’ political leader in a bombing in Tehran has caused shockwaves in the Palestinian territories, with some voices expressing disappointment that Iran was unable to “protect” him.

“This news is unbelievable,” said Wael Qudayh, 35, a resident of Deir al Balah.

Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced Wednesday that Haniyeh was killed in a bombing in Tehran attributed to Israel.

He was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration of President Masud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

“Qatar was able to protect Haniyeh for 10 months, but Iran could not do so even for a few hours,” said Yusef Saed, 40, also a resident of Deir al-Balah.

In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Hosam Abdel Razek, 45, an employee at a private institution in Ramallah, said Haniye’s death showed that “Palestinian blood is cheap.”

“The death of Ismail Haniyeh in Iran shows that we, the Palestinian people, have no protector, that our blood is cheap and that the Arab and Islamic nation sold us out to the United States and Israel,” he stressed.

Sami Naem said in Deir al-Balah that the death “will affect negotiations” for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
