Organizers of three concerts by American pop star Taylor Swift scheduled to begin tomorrow in Vienna have announced the cancellation of the shows in the wake of terror attacks that led to the arrest of two people, one of whom is affiliated with ISIS.
Two arrests and a possible, tragic massacre narrowly avoided. In Vienna, local authorities have nipped in the bud a sensational terrorist plan: to strike at the concerts of the most famous singer in the world, Taylor Swift. The American star, on tour in Europe these weeks, was supposed to perform at the Ernst-Happel stadium in the Austrian capital on August 8, 9 and 10. But the party could have turned into a horrible massacre. The two people arrested by the police in the space of a few hours were planning to strike on one of the three evenings in which the show is scheduled.
The first arrest was made in the morning, in a small town an hour’s drive from Vienna, Ternitz. The suspected terrorist is a 19-year-old resident of Lower Austria, whose identity has not been revealed but it was revealed that he had sworn allegiance to ISIS. The director general for public security at the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, Franz Ruf, explained in a press conference that the investigations had revealed “preparatory activities” for an attack by the 19-year-old. The police then showed up at his home in a blitz, evacuating several nearby houses and closing the streets. The police then arrested the young man and found and seized suspicious “chemical substances”. According to the investigations, the man had become radicalized on the Internet. The second suspect was arrested in the afternoon in Vienna and according to local media he is 17 years old although the authorities have not provided further information.
According to some Austrian media – but local authorities have not confirmed the news – there are three other suspected attackers on the run, also involved in planning an attack on the Ernst-Happel stadium.
Austrian Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl said a real danger had been averted.
