Stock of blood reserves is at critical levels

Dessau/Springe/MZ. – It’s warm, the sun is shining, many people are on vacation: The blood donation service of the German Red Cross NSTOB has also noticed this. According to the service, so few people came to the blood donation appointments that supplies have reached the critical lower limit. The DRK is urgently calling on people to go and donate blood.

The blood donation service NSTOB supplies medical facilities in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Bremen and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with blood

The blood donation service supplies medical facilities in Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Bremen and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with blood. Around 2,500 to 3,000 blood donors are needed every day to ensure a secure supply in these areas. In recent weeks, up to ten percent fewer people have come to donate blood than are needed. This means that at least 250 blood donors are missing every day.

This is now becoming apparent: there are currently only 8,900 blood units in stock, the statement says. In order to cover all the needs of hospitals, at least 10,000 units must be in stock. Blood cannot be artificially replaced, so a lack of blood donations can quickly become life-threatening for sick and injured people.

“It’s tight. The shelves are empty,” says Markus Baulke, head of the blood donor advertising and public relations department. “We have not been able to fully supply the hospital’s needs for a few days now. That’s why it’s important to replenish blood reserves as quickly as possible,” Baulke expresses concern.

In principle, any healthy person aged 18 or over can donate blood

In principle, any healthy person over the age of 18 can donate blood. There must be an interval of at least 56 days between two blood donations. Blood donors should bring their blood donor card and an official photo ID, if they already have one.

Every day, numerous blood donation appointments are offered in the area of the DRK blood donation service. In Dessau-Roßlau, blood donations are possible from Monday to Friday at the Dessau-Alten Institute: Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition, an event is planned on August 14th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the tax office.
