For the second day in a row, Ukraine has launched a major ground and air attack to penetrate Russia in areas of the Kursk region bordering the Russian-Ukrainian border, Russian authorities have acknowledged.
Officials said Russia repelled the attacks – one of the largest incursions into the country since the war began in 2022 – but there were signs of significant military movements in the area near the border town of Sudzha, 530 km (330 miles) southwest of Moscow. It is the last operational transshipment point for Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that up to 300 Ukrainian soldiers, supported by 11 tanks and more than 20 armored fighting vehicles, had crossed into Russia and suffered heavy losses.
The ministry said Russian forces backed by artillery and warplanes “did not allow the enemy to advance deeper into the territory of the Russian Federation.” It added that “the operation to destroy Ukrainian military units continues.”
Some Russian war bloggers who have proven to be well informed about the war claimed that there were Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk.
Rybar, a popular Telegram channel run by Mikhail Zvinchuk, a retired press officer of the Russian Defense Ministry, said Ukrainian troops had seized three settlements in the region, with about 400 men reportedly entering, and were still fighting to get further in. Another 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers were reportedly stationed on the border.
Another pro-Kremlin military blog, Two Majors, claimed Ukrainian troops had advanced up to 15 kilometers into the region.
According to the Ukrainian military channel DeepState, the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which have not officially confirmed the operation, took a group of Russian soldiers prisoner.
None of these claims have been independently verified.
