He Salamanca University Hospital Complex stands out in the country. So much so that it has become the first center in the autonomous community selected to obtain the designation of Comprehensive Cancer Center granted by the European Organisation of Institutes of Cancerwhich thus recognizes the excellence of the health center in oncological treatment and research in Spain. The only centre that currently has this accreditation is the Vall D’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona.
Prevention and quality of life
The initiative seeks Expand the European system of cancer centres of excellence in order to improve the prevention, detection, treatment and quality of life of cancer patients throughout the European Union. Entry into this network will facilitate the opportunity to access Innovative treatments and clinical trials that are developed in other European hospitals as well as the exchange between different research networks.
The steps to follow
To achieve the higher status of Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), as has been the case in Salamanca, they must meet additional criteria related to infrastructure, experience and high-level innovation in oncological research, in addition to strong university links and having research institutes or a university association integrated into the center, in addition to an extensive network of international collaboration.
It is important to note that OECI accreditation is valid for five yearsafter which the centres must undergo a reaccreditation process to maintain its status. This system ensures that high standards of quality in cancer care, research and education are maintained over time.
