Another disaster for car companies? There are chips again, major supplier has problems and big layoffs – Garáž.cz

The company Intel is one of the main manufacturers and suppliers of components in the field of IT, which is more surprising given how big a crisis the company has had recently. It responds to a series of failed new processes and a reduction in stock value with large-scale layoffs. In the end, the whole thing can have a big impact on the whole world of cars.

Intel expects about 15,000 workers to lose their jobs in the future. The main reason is the unsatisfactory results of new processors of the 13th and 14th generation, as well as poor competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence. At the same time, the company said that it will stop paying dividends from the fourth quarter until the whole financial situation is resolved.

“Intel had really bad numbers and promised massive cost cuts. Overall, this industry is ripe for restructuring. In today’s chip manufacturing, everyone is seeing a boom around AI, but there are a number of factors at play. ” in an interview for Seznam Zpravy Tomáš Pfeiler, Cyrrus portfolio manager. “There is a lot of speculation that the economy should slow down again, which is not playing into the cards for manufacturers,” he said.

Last Thursday, Intel stock posted its second worst drop since a 31% drop in July 1974!

This unfortunate situation can affect the automotive industry as well. Intel is an important supplier for several car manufacturers. Today, the company’s chips are on board 50 million cars, and the company works closely with 18 manufacturers to whom it supplies electronic components and system software.

This is like a gauntlet for competing players, especially Nvidia and AMD. But it’s not entirely rosy for them either, because they will hardly find free production capabilities so quickly that Intel’s production is fully represented. So is there a risk of another chip shortage after the covid crisis, which led to delays in the delivery of new cars and the complete paralysis of the car industry? Experts are cautious with the decision so far, but they certainly do not rule out this possibility.

Intel’s current restructuring is the biggest since it switched to memory microprocessors 30 years ago.

Even the car companies themselves are starting to get defensive. For them, suppliers of chips and other IT components are increasingly important, as their number in modern digital cars is increasing. Due to the lack of chips, paradoxical situations arose years ago when, for example, some brands returned to classic analog alarm clocks rather than waiting for digital instrument panels. But this was just something that “classic” motorists didn’t care about at all…
