Paris. American Simone Biles claimed her third gold medal in Paris 2024 and the seventh Olympic title of her career on Saturday, taking the vault crown from Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, winner in Tokyo 2020 and reigning world champion, who took silver.
Once again out of reach, Biles thus regained another of the golds she won in Rio 2016 and then was unable to defend three years ago in Tokyo, where she suffered from a mental block, and headed a podium completed by her compatriot Jade Carey, who won bronze.
Recovered from the nightmare of Tokyo, Biles, 27, has only won gold medals in Paris so far. The most decorated gymnast in history, who has already won ten Olympic medals in total, has won every event she has entered so far at these Games, which the US gymnastics team has dubbed the “redemption” Games.
Taking Olympic titles into account, the American star now equals Czech Vera Caslavska, who also won seven during her career, and is two behind legend Larissa Latynina, who won nine, the most so far in gymnastics.
Biles, winner of 23 world titles, could equal her record if she also wins the title on Monday on the floor, where she was champion in Rio 2016, and on the balance beam, where she has two bronzes (one in Rio 2016 and another in Tokyo 2020).
Andrade, for his part, thus adds his third medal in Paris 2024, after the silver in the individual competition and the historic team bronze that he led Brazil to, raising his Olympic record to five medals, which ties him with the most medalists in his country.
