Lyon – A few hours after his French team’s dramatic 3-1 semi-final victory against Egypt, Bayern’s new signing Michael Olise posted impressions of the match on Instagram. As befits his status, without a caption. Firstly, his performances speak for themselves. And secondly, they are not a “one-hit wonder”, but rather the standard for him.

FC Bayern newcomer Olise makes the difference in key moments
“Michael is fast, tricky, dangerous in front of goal and can be used in a variety of offensive situations. Fans come to the stadium for players like Michael Olise,” enthused sporting director Christoph Freund after the signing. And thanks to players like Michael Olise, France can hope to win gold at the Olympics on home soil.

With the score at 0-1 against Egypt, Olise played a perfectly timed pass through the gaps to Jean-Philippe Mateta to equalise. In extra time, the 22-year-old decided the game with a precise cross from his – now former – strike partner from Palace times to make it 2-1. Olise himself made it 3-1.
Also defensively alert: Olise becomes France’s new hope
Bayern’s new signing demands the ball, impresses with his calmness and overview and takes control of the game. The attacker also has enormous consistency, determination and self-assurance in his actions.
With two goals and four assists, Olise is the most valuable player on his team and in the Olympic football tournament. The 22-year-old has scored at least once in each of his starting appearances. “Michael has made the difference again. He does some pretty extraordinary things with his feet,” enthused his coach Thierry Henry.
France’s U21 coach continued: “He is a very important player for us. He can pass, he can score, he has a very good understanding of space. He knows how to press.”

Olise is also extremely attentive defensively. When Argentina pushed for an equalizer in injury time in the quarter-finals and the ball was pinballed to the advancing center-back Nicolás Otamendi, it was Bayern’s new signing who had the presence of mind to block the shot on goal. In modern football terms, such players are called “big game players”. The bigger the game, the better the performance.
Jamal Musiala is looking forward to Olise: “It will be cool to talk to him again”
Sporting director Max Eberl will feel all the happier and more vindicated that he triggered the €53 million (or easy?) exit clause long before the Olympics. If Olise’s nameplate still said Crystal Palace, co-owner and CEO Steve Parish could start bidding. And Europe’s top clubs would be lining up now. In recent years, almost all of the Premier League’s celebrities have been after Olise. At the beginning of the summer, his youth club Chelsea still had good cards before Eberl put the Bavarian royal flush on the table.
“Transfermarkt” puts the all-rounder’s value at 55 million euros – just two more than the record champions paid in transfer fees. It’s quite possible that a few million more will be added after the tournament. The platform took a similar approach after the European Championship with Jamal Musiala, who is now the most expensive player in the league in terms of market value – and is looking forward to seeing his old friend from his Chelsea days.

“He’s a great player. I haven’t seen him for years. We used to play together with him in the youth team at Chelsea, so it will be cool to talk to him again and see how his life has been in recent years since we went our separate ways. He has a lot of quality and is doing really well at the Olympics. We’re all looking forward to him being with us,” enthused the national player in an interview with AZ.
It would not be the first time that an Olympic star has made it to FC Bayern. In 2016, Serge Gnabry led the German team to the final against Brazil with six goals and was an integral part of FC Bayern in the following years and especially of the 2020 sextuple team. Three years ago, Luis de la Fuente had almost his entire European champions team start in the final: Unai Simón, Marc Cucurella, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal were all there in Tokyo.
Will FC Bayern also defeat their arch-rivals in the DFB Cup with Olise?
Olise will also face Spain early on Friday evening. The Iberians also have an exceptional player in their ranks in the form of Barca talent Fermín López. Olise will join the team after the final. The new signing had already taken his vacation before the Olympics.
A good week later, the 22-year-old will have to help his new employer in the nemesis of recent years, the DFB Cup in Ulm. But Olise will approach this like any other game. After all, exceptional performances have become the norm for him.
