Namal Rajapaksa is the presidential candidate of Sri Lanka

Colombo: In the Sri Lankan presidential election to be held on September 21, SLPP Namal (28), the youngest member of the Rajapaksa family, will compete as a candidate. Namal is the son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is nominated by SLPP. This ended support capacity.

SLPP (Sri Lanka Perumuna Public Affairs) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam announced Namal’s candidacy on Wednesday morning. Besides Namal and Wickramasinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, JVP leader Aruna Kumara Dissanayake and former army chief Sarath Fonseka are also contesting.

Wickremesinghe Prasad was supported by Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his brothers, who resigned as president in 2022 due to popular unrest. It has been announced that he will compete in this year’s presidential election, and about 100 SLPP members in parliament. The members were supportive.
