Tuesday’s training session on the Seine for the open water swimming races was canceled as the water in the famous river was unsuitable for swimming, according to organizers.
This is the fifth practice to be canceled since the start of the Olympics, with the first four involving the triathlon. As is known, the men’s triathlon races have been postponed by one day.
Several triathletes expressed their dismay at these back-to-back cancellations, but also at the uncertainty about holding the races on the scheduled dates.
In order for athletes to be able to swim, authorities closely monitor two levels of bacteria in the stool: that of E. Coli bacteria and that of enterococci.
On Monday, the organizing committee said the triathletes had been informed before the medley relay race of the water analyses, including exceeding regulatory levels measured by a laboratory at one of the four test points.
