How Snoop Dogg overcomes his fear of horses at the Dressage Olympics

On Saturday (August 3, 2024), Snoop Dogg caused a stir at the Olympic Games in Paris when he attended the dressage competitions with Martha Stewart, despite admitting to being afraid of horses. The 52-year-old rapper is serving as a special correspondent for NBC at the Games, similar to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he rose to fame with his humorous commentary on a dressage ride.

Snoop Dogg supports horses – but only from a safe distance

Despite his fear, Snoop Dog dared to feed some of the horses. Accompanied by Stewart, he explained: “I’m interested in the horses that dance, and I want to give them some carrots and apples and make sure they’re fed before they do their thing.” When US presenter Stewart asked if he had ever sat on a horse, he replied: “No, I’m scared.”

Stewart, who organized the dressage schedule, explained: “Snoop called me and said that he knows I know horses and that he is a little bit scared of horses.” The musician himself added: “I’m still scared of horses.”

During his visit, Snoop Dogg recalled the viral footage of a “horse crip walking” at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, joking, “This horse is off the chain. I gotta get this motherfucker in a video!” After the dressage competition, the American headed to the Parc des Princes, where he watched the U.S. women’s team defeat Japan 1-0 in the Olympic soccer tournament.

During the actual dressage competition, Snoop and Stewart watched as Isabell Werth became the most decorated German Olympian. With eight gold and five silver medals, she led the German team to victory over Denmark and Great Britain. This success meant Germany’s fourth gold in Paris and made Werth the most successful German Olympian. In addition to the team gold, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl also won the gold medal in the individual dressage competition for Germany.

In dressage, however, Snoop was unable to support the US athletes with his presence. The US dressage team’s medal dreams at the Olympic Games ended abruptly when one of their horses suffered a minor injury. On the very first day of the dressage competition, the American team was excluded from the team competition.

Marcus Orlab, making his Olympic debut, was the first U.S. rider to enter the arena. During the zigzag canter, the judges stopped him abruptly because they noticed blood on his horse’s hind leg. Orlab explained that when Jane entered the arena, she saw the crowd for the first time and reared up slightly. He suspects she injured herself in the process.

A successful partnership with NBC

Since the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, Snoop Dogg, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., has attracted attention with his appearances. Whether as a torchbearer, spectator at the swimming event, supporter of Simone Biles during gymnastics or as a commentator at the badminton match between the USA and China – he attracted attention everywhere. The 52-year-old is a special correspondent for “NBC” and is expected to increase the hype for the games in the USA.

The rapper’s presence was widely celebrated in Paris – and Molly Solomon, senior Olympic producer at NBC, expressed her enthusiasm: “We are pleasantly surprised by his popularity, but you should never underestimate Snoop Dogg. He is this wonderful mix of bravado and positivity.”

His relaxed and humorous way of commenting on sporting events has been particularly well received on social media. NBC is trying to boost the declining ratings in the USA and appeal to the younger generation. Despite his continued marijuana use, he is now celebrated as an American cultural asset. “People want me to be myself,” he said in an interview. The New York Times called him “the new voice of the people.”
