The meeting, which was postponed due to the reactions of the residents and the intervention of the Popular Rally of Skydra, revealed deep disagreements and intense conflicts between the factions.
The People’s Coalition of Skydra, led by Yiannis Soumelidis, accused the Municipal Authority of selling off municipal land to private individuals and argued that the meeting was held in the middle of summer, when farmers are in full working season, in order to avoid reactions. In its announcement, the People’s Rally emphasized that the decision to lease the lands is a victory against the logic that wants all social goods to go into private hands.
For its part, the Municipal Authority of Skydra, through the mouth of Mayor Katerina Ignatiadou, rejected the accusations, stressing that it is not a concession but a lease by auction, in which all interested parties can participate, including the Energy Communities. The Mayor underlined that the area of 300 acres, of which only 80 acres will be covered by photovoltaics, is not suitable for any other use, and that there is no question of mortgaging the future of the land.
The People’s Rally responded by accusing the Municipal Authority of a lack of transparency and trying to serve specific business interests. Yiannis Soumelidis called on the residents to continue their fight for the protection of municipal lands and to resist the concession of public goods to business interests.
The Mayor of Skydra, Katerina Ignatiadou, responded, underlining the Municipal Authority’s commitment to transparency and respect for democracy and institutions. He emphasized that the municipal authority has nothing to hide and that the procedures will continue with full transparency and respect for the interests of the citizens.
The intense confrontation looks set to continue, as the two factions remain unmoved in their positions. The next meeting of the Municipal Council is awaited with particular interest, as the issue of leasing municipal land for photovoltaics weighs the endurance of the local community and municipal authorities.
