(Motorsport-Total.com) – Marcel Schrötter finished his third race for the injured Deniz Öncü in 17th place, equalling his result from the Sachsenring. In a crash-filled Moto2 race in Silverstone, the German again failed to score any points, but still drew a positive overall conclusion.
Marcel Schrötter also remained pointless in the Moto2 race at Silverstone Zoom
“At the end of a difficult weekend, we definitely delivered a solid performance in the race,” said the 31-year-old, who again competed for the Finnish Ajo team.
The problem: He always starts the race weekend on Friday with “a big deficit” because the transition to Moto2 is “incredibly difficult” for him, who normally rides an MV Agusta in the Supersport World Championship.
This deficit could not be made up in the following two days. “Silverstone was even more complicated because of the difficult track. In addition, this class is at a very high level,” said Schrötter.
“The guys are mega-fast and they also have the advantage of knowing the Pirelli tires used here a little better now, so they can get more out of a lap in qualifying. These are things that you can’t achieve with the snap of a finger,” the German emphasises.
Early incident spoils better result
He qualified 26th and went into the 17-lap race on Sunday with a corresponding handicap. Schrötter knows: “A lot can happen when you’re stuck at the back, which was unfortunately the case when another driver crashed.”
“The situation when the train turned onto the back straight not only cost me my momentum, but also all the riders behind me. This immediately created a gap to the group that was fighting for the last points. I was then unable to close this gap. That was a bit of a shame.”
Without this incident, Schrötter believes, points would have been possible. “Because I had a good pace and led my group for most of the race. In addition, I often drove the same times, if not sometimes faster than the guys in tenth to twelveth or thirteenth place.”
Schrötter: Adaptation to Moto2 very difficult
In the end, the 31-year-old was four and a half seconds behind Marcos Ramirez in 15th place and the last place in the points. Overall, however, he sees potential and speaks of a “solid race”, especially considering the circumstances.
“Starting the weekend with such a big gap doesn’t make life any easier, especially when you start the race from so far back. Of course, switching between the different racing machines also contributes to this.”
“But it must be possible to be better from the start and then have a better starting position,” says Schrötter, who will be competing in the Supersport World Championship again this weekend. The championship is visiting Portimao, Portugal, for its seventh event of the season.
