“The Battle of the Pool” – A short story by the Municipality of Verykios about… the Mitsotakis trough in Chania – 2024-08-05 17:27:30

In the history of the swimming pool… of Olympic dimensions that was built by Konstantinos Mitsotakis, father of Kyriakos, Dimos Verykios is mentioned in an article published on ieidiseis.gr, recalling a case similar to the current case of the swimming pool in the house of St. Kasselakis in Spetses, a story that had dominated the political confrontation of the place 30 years ago, but with other protagonists at the time and with a reversal of the “victims” and the “perpetrators”.

Among other things, D. Verykios notes that “the arbitrary Mitsotakis trough in Chania was replaced by the arbitrary Kasselakis cistern in Spetses. Again, same mother. Identical confrontation with poison darts, without any substance that just pollute the political culture.”

Concluding, he points out: “Patriots, deal with the serious and hot issues that concern the world and leave the water guns. You are big kids…”

Follows the article of the Municipality of Verikios.

The battle of the pool: 30 years later – From the trough of Chania to the cistern of Spetses

At the end of the 80s during the dominance of “Aurianism” for a long time the public political debate revolved around the villa with the seven cabins and the “arbitrary” swimming pool that Konstantinos Mitsotakis had built in Akrotiri Chania just above Souda Bay . The house where today Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomes foreign leaders and officials…

In the serial with the seven cabins and the arbitrary swimming pool that Marika made… long shots, “Avriani” cut and Kakaunakis sewed…

It is true that the impression that Mitsotakis, as a nouveau riche politician, in the family business, had built a villa like no one else in Greece had been established in the world’s consciousness.

An entrenched belief in public opinion that could hardly be overturned unless you happened to visit Mitsotakis’ summer palace…

Like me who had then bought the swimming pool project until one August afternoon in 1994, that is exactly thirty years ago, when Mitsotakis was informed that we were vacationing in Chania with Pikia and the Hatzidakis couple (Dionysis was then director of his political office) invites for dinner in the “villa”.

As the front door opens, a well-kept garden stretches out in front of us with an all-white low-ceilinged single-family house nestled in the green foliage of the trees and aromatic plants of Psiloritis, a little further a table set in front of the infamous swimming pool… of Olympic dimensions.

Scanning the first sneak peek brings me disappointment.

– Where is the villa of “Auriani” and the swimming pool of Kakaounis with the water tank from which Marika makes… long walks!

It comes out to me spontaneously: “This is not a swimming pool, with sympathy, it’s a trough” I say directly to Mitsotakis and he, being a monster of composure (something the son probably does not possess) answers me with that cold smile: “You are right to observe it, it is small but absolutely necessary for Marika’s hydrokinesitherapy”.

I continue to tickle him: – But is it possible that Kakaounis has not noticed that this is not an Olympic-sized swimming pool but a trough? ” Of course Nikolis knew it, he consciously exaggerated, it is within the necessary framework of your work. This is classic hitting below the belt in the political arena. But I didn’t mind the extreme attack I received for the seven cabins and the Olympic-sized pool, I’m saddened that the political debate has been reduced to the level of rubbish.”

Mitsotakis, as an enthusiastic host, urges us to show us around the house with seven cabinets and makes it clear from the beginning that my favorite part of this house is their bedroom window from which they have a “dish” of the entire bay Soudas. He reveals why: “I wake up early in the morning and as I open my eyes I feel like I’m on a plane and flying over Souda, ready to land on the island…”.

This is how the guided tour of a Museum of Contemporary Multicultural Art begins. A house full of memories from all over the world with objects brought from every trip. Decorator, their very life…

– And why am I telling you all that happened exactly 30 years ago in Akrotiri of Chania in front of the trough… of Olympic dimensions of Konstantinos Mitsotakis?

Answer: Because since yesterday they come to my mind again as we are spectators in the same play but with a reversal of roles.

The arbitrary Mitsotakis trough in Chania was replaced by the arbitrary Kasselaki cistern in Spetses. Again, same mother. Identical confrontation with poison darts, without any substance that just pollute the political culture.

As a spectator – suspected and baked in the furnace of life – I close my eyes and ears to the screening of the adapted work “Battle of the Pool” and keep only the words of old Mitsotakis above his… trough: “I didn’t mind the extreme attack which I personally accepted for the seven cabins and the Olympic-sized swimming pool, it saddens me that the political confrontation has been reduced to the level of rubbish”…

You younger nation fathers are listening. There is an immediate danger when the political confrontation has no limits and red lines to drag you into the abyss…

PS: As far as I remember. The PASOK government was not officially involved in the carousel of revelations by “Avariani” and Kakaunakis about the Mitsotakis pool, as the government representative for the Kasselakis pool did yesterday.

Hey patriots, deal with the serious and hot issues that concern the world and leave the water guns. You are big kids…
