Last year, around 24,700 people in Rhineland-Palatinate received Bafög. The number of recipients remained almost the same as the previous year, increasing by 0.1 percent, according to the State Statistical Office in Bad Ems. “This is the first time in ten years that there has been no decline.”

Of those receiving financial support, 81 percent, or 19,900, were students. Students at vocational schools and general schools, as well as at evening schools and colleges, also received Bafög. On average, people received 638 euros a month. This means that the average monthly grant amount increased by around eight percent.

In a ten-year comparison, however, the number of recipients has fallen significantly. In 2013, 31,200 students and 13,000 schoolchildren received Bafög. “The bureaucratic burden, parental allowances that are too low, loan shares that are too high or alternative funding offers are often cited as the reasons for the decline in Bafög recipients,” the office said.
