There have already been more than 40 corona infections or other respiratory diseases in the Australian Olympic team during the Summer Games in Paris. This was reported by Australia’s swimming head coach Rohan Taylor and team doctor Carolyn Broderick, according to the Australian agency AAP.
Among those infected were some members of the swimming team, such as Olympic silver medalist in the 200-meter breaststroke, Zac Stubblety-Cook. According to Rohan, some Australian athletes took part in the competitions despite a positive Covid test, while others decided not to take part.
About half of the 84 PCR tests positive
According to team leader Anna Meares, two PCR testing devices were used within the Australian Olympic team in the Olympic Village in order to be able to react quickly to corona infections. According to team doctor Broderick, a total of 84 PCR tests had been carried out by Monday, and about half of them were positive.
To minimize the risk of infection, the Australian athletes only eat dinner in the dining room of the Olympic Village. Breakfast and lunch are prepared in an allotment reserved for the team.
“The ability to eat meals without having to go to the village dining hall has helped us to continue to compete and probably given us a significant advantage over other countries,” said Taylor. Australia’s swimming team won seven gold, eight silver and three bronze medals in Paris.
