Faulkner, at the age of 31, achieved a lifetime success. She attacked from the four-person leader 3 km from the finish line and, taking advantage of her rivals’ moment of hesitation, quickly gained a large advantage, which grew to 58 seconds.
Three athletes competed for the remaining medals in the sprint: silver was won by Dutchwoman Marianne Vos, bronze went to world champion Lotte Kopecky, and centimetres separated Hungarian Blanka Vas from the podium.
Niewiadoma, who crashed during the 157-kilometer race, finished alone in eighth place, 2:44 behind. Lach, who was tenth, lost 3:27, and Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka took 45th place, losing 7:53.
