KKB hostages and kills New Zealand pilot in Alama District, Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Cartenz Peace Task Force said it was an armed criminal group KKB kidnapped and killed a helicopter pilot with PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, Glen Malcolm Conning (50) on Monday, August 5 2024. The New Zealand pilot was taken hostage and killed in Alama District, Mimika Regency, Central Papua.

The Head of Cartenz 2024 Peace Operations, Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, disclosed that the incident occurred when the Glencolm helicopter landed in Alama District, Mimika. The helicopter was carrying four passengers, including two adults who work as health workers, a baby and a child.

Security officials say that Alama District is a remote area. To get there it can only be reached by helicopter.

The Head of Public Relations of the Cartenz 2024 Peace Task Force, High Commissioner Bayu Suseno, said that the authorities had received information from a witness with the initials D. In his testimony, KKB confronted the pilot and the his passengers using guns immediately.

“And at that time the pilot Mr. Glen Malcolm Conning was killed instantly by the KKB,” he said in a written statement, Monday, August 5, 2024.

He said that the body of the pilot from New Zealand was taken to the helicopter after he was killed. KKB also shot down the IWN helicopter, MD type. 500 ER PK by PT Intan Angkasa Air Service brought by Glen Malcolm.

At the same time, all passengers, he said, were safe. “All the passengers are safe as they are local residents of Alama District,” he said.

Bayu said the TNI and Polri together with the Mimika Police are still in pursuit of the armed criminal group that kidnapped and killed the pilot. He revealed that the KKB were criminals so that criminal characteristics were always associated with this group.

He said that the KKB’s plan to release another pilot from Susi Air, Philip Mark Mehrtens, was just propaganda. “Of course, today it happened again, right? A foreign pilot was killed by the KKB,” he said.
