/ world today news/ The two-day negotiations in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) have ended. The main question that now torments everyone: what was it? The participants did not make statements after the meeting. Meanwhile, a wave of informational “fusions” spread in the world media – from Kiev’s alleged refusal to demand the withdrawal of Russian troops to the complete failure of Zelensky’s peace plan.
The peace conference held in Jeddah on August 5-6 brought together representatives of 42 countries. As expected, Russia did not attend the meeting (we were not invited). But at the negotiating table were Russia’s BRICS partners, led by China and countries from the Global South.
However, the summit ended with nothing official. There are no joint statements and declarations. No announcements of future plans. The only concrete thing is that the meeting participants agreed to continue discussing scenarios for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Most likely in September at the G20 fields, but this is not certain.
So what happened, high delegations wasted aviation fuel? Not at all. Most analysts agree that for the results – and there are some, although they have not been announced – Russia can easily take credit. All you have to do is be able to read between the lines.
Perhaps the most poignant statement after the “weekend summit” was made by The Wall Street Journal.
„At the talks in Jeddah, Ukraine softened its stance on peace talks with Russia, agreeing to discuss a settlement without withdrawing Russian troops from the entire country. wrote the WSJ, citing unnamed EU negotiators.
We recall that earlier the complete withdrawal of Russian troops to the 1991 borders was highlighted by Kiev as the main condition for starting any negotiations with Moscow.
Ukrainian political scientist Vasily Stoyakin says that on the public stage, Kiev is unlikely to abandon its plan. However, Zelensky has forbidden himself to negotiate with the Kremlin. However, similar publications in the Western media are addressed personally to the owner of Bankova:
– Ukraine will try to push its plan further. Simply because they have no other plan. In order for Kiev to abandon the “Zelensky formula”, he (Zelensky. – “MK”) must be pushed into a ram’s horn. Only the US can do that. And they send him unequivocal hints. For example, the fact that Elena Zelenskaya with a temporary administration in the person of the Verkhovna Rada can become the president of Ukraine “quite by accident”. In Kyiv, these hints are well understood. So the process has started, but it’s not going very smart yet, Stoyakin summarizes in an interview for MK.
Moscow is also sending subtle hints. A day ago, Dmitry Peskov in an interview with The New York Times said that Russia wants to control those regions that are written in the constitution as its own.
So the main takeaway from last weekend, according to analysts, is that there were hints of at least a freeze on the conflict. The US position here is more pro than con:
„The United States clearly underestimated the power of Russia and now wants to get out of the crisis while maintaining its position and reputation. One way is to blame everything on Ukraine and run away.” D. McGregor, a former adviser to the Pentagon chief, said in an interview.
Political scientist Yury Baranchik emphasized an important detail that could have escaped the layman’s eye. The fields of Jeddah actually recorded the creation of coalition “Moscow – Riyadh – Beijing – Coalition of African countries”. This is another important result.
„Moscow is simply sending a signal that everything is right, the agreements that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia told about and that Beijing joined are in place. The West failed to turn the Global South against Russia and lost this half of the global confrontation. Moscow may consider this round. Now we will wait for the reaction of the West,” – writes the expert in his Telegram channel.
By the way, the very fact of China’s participation in the Jeddah Summit is another independent outcome of the meeting that should not be underestimated. “China agreed to participate (in the Jeddah summit. – “MK”) for several reasonsSinologist Nikolay Vavilov analyzes the results of the meeting.
Saudi Arabia is Xi Jinping’s second most important ally after Russia. This country is not a member of NATO. For Beijing, this is the site of a previous success – the rekindling of relations between the Saudis and Iran. About 40 countries took part in the meeting – this is the summit of the Global South. There is nothing anti-Russian here.”
Political scientist Ivan Mezyukho, chairman of the Crimean regional public organization Center for Political Education, says that China, participating in the meeting in Jeddah, is actively trying to pull the blanket over itself and play the role of the main peacemaker.
– Each country that participated in the meeting in Saudi Arabia pursues its own interests. China is trying to take the place of chief negotiator. Before that, the place belonged to Turkey. But after releasing the Azovians (the organization was recognized as terrorist and banned in Russia), Ankara lost this status. Now China and Turkey are competing,” the expert thinks.
Meanwhile, following the results of the meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a series of brief statements. The main one was expressed by the representative of the department, Maria Zakharova: “Without Russia’s participation and taking into account its interests, no meetings on Ukraine have the slightest added value.”
