Bulgaria has not given up on the “Burgas-Alexandroupolis” project – 2024-08-05 09:30:54

/ world today news/ The “Burgas-Alexandroupolis” oil pipeline project has not been archived and can be restored if necessary. Transneft recently received notification from Bulgaria of its plans to retain the project. This was reported to journalists by the director of the Russian company Nikolai Tokarev, RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday (July 19).

It was assumed that the “Burgas-Alexandroupolis” pipeline would transport oil bypassing the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles. The oil pipeline with a capacity of 35 million tons per year, with a possible expansion to 50 million tons, was supposed to pass from the Bulgarian port of Burgas on the Black Sea to the Greek port of Alexandroupolis on the Aegean Sea.

“We were pleasantly surprised by the Bulgarian partners. We recently received official notification that they are willing to keep the prospects ahead of the project. They are against the liquidation of the management company that was created for the implementation of the project. She was then frozen. Now everyone is interested in it, including our Bulgarian partners,” said Tokarev, answering a question about whether the events in Turkey will help the development of alternative routes for oil transport.

“This project has not been archived. It was developed back in the day and is still around. If necessary, it can be taken off the shelf and work on it can begin. This is one of the options,” added the director of Transneft.

In June, the Minister of Finance of Bulgaria Vladislav Goranov stated that Bulgaria canceled the liquidation procedure of the joint company “Trans-Balkan Pipeline BV” with Russia and Greece, created for the construction of the oil pipeline.

In December 2011, the Bulgarian government announced its decision to withdraw from the project.
The Parliament of Bulgaria decided by a majority to terminate the intergovernmental agreement. Residents of Burgas also voted against the construction of the oil pipeline in a referendum. Residents of the seaside town fear that it will negatively affect tourism.
