Catherine – Princess of Wales -in the new book, for the first time, the image of Princess Catherine is discussed in more detail. The biography is written by bestselling author and court correspondent Robert Jobson. The book is also available in Finnish.
At the beginning of March, Princess Catherine of Wales was caught with image manipulation. A Mother’s Day picture of Catherine and the children was published on the family’s joint Instagram account, which had been edited several times in Photoshop. The image scandal happened during Catherine’s sick leave, because less than two months earlier she had undergone a major operation in the abdominal area.

Italicized passages are excerpts from the book.
Her (Catherine’s) absence from the public scene and the silence of Kensington Palace had fueled wild conspiracy theories on the internet. To quell the rumours, the couple shared a photo in mid-March in honor of British Mother’s Day. Catherine had photoshopped the image to make it more attractive.
The unfortunate episode was dubbed Kategate and Sleevegate (‘Hihagate’) by the media, and the incident deeply grieved and embarrassed an already fragile Catherine and seriously damaged Kensington Palace’s credibility and royal brand. The mistake itself was quite innocent. Catherine had naively photoshopped the picture taken by William at least three times for the benefit of the family before handing it over to the communications team at Kensington Palace. The team then posted it on their Instagram account and shared it with the media as an official photo. Soon it was noticed from the picture that there was something strange in Princess Charlotte’s sleeve.
The case sparked a huge amount of discussion in the media about the reliability of the court, Catherine’s state of health, and the relationship between the family.
The communication strategy of the royal family and the expectations for the family were discussed even more fiercely. Despite the demands, Hovi refused to make the original photo public, which was apt to increase the impression of secrecy, especially since Catherine’s engagement and wedding rings, shining through their absence from the photo, led to new feverish speculation. It was explained that they had been accidentally forgotten after the operation, but the obscurity was not suitable to satisfy the general public’s curiosity.
It was considered at court that they would publish the original photo to prove their credibility, but according to the book, the prince William didn’t want it. The book claims that William’s PR team wanted the couple to make a “joint statement” about the incident, so that the accusations and anger would not only be directed at Catherine, who is recovering from surgery.
First, a press release was prepared, in which the persons concerned were spoken of in the plural, but the prince decided not to make it public, after all, Catherine had manipulated the picture, and William was in no way involved in the manipulation. When the announcement was finally made, Catherine pleaded guilty.
Less than two weeks after the scandal, the Princess of Wales announced publicly that she was suffering from cancer. A large number of people showed their support for Catherine.
Catherine – Princess of Wales – the book will be published on August 1, 2024. The book is available in Finnish and its publisher is Tammi.
