Opposition and government mobilize in Venezuela amid tensions over election results – Diario La Página – 2024-08-04 08:20:34

Venezuela’s government and opposition took to the streets of Caracas on Saturday, some to support the electoral body’s declaration that President Nicolas Maduro won Sunday’s election and the opposition to protest claims of fraud.

The opposition insists that candidate Edmundo González Urrutia won, and claims to have the records to prove it.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado called for peaceful protests on Saturday to, she said, pay tribute to those who defended the “will of the people” in the elections, and she was present at the march through Caracas.

Nine of the 10 presidential candidates appeared before the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) on Friday, where eight of them signed a notification in which the court informs that it will certify the results of last Sunday’s election in a ruling that will be “mandatory,” following an appeal filed by Maduro.

Opposition and human rights organizations have denounced an escalation in repression and persecution against Venezuelans who do not support the government. Machado has said she remains in hiding and fears for her life.
