In Hamburg, tens of thousands of people took part in a large demonstration for Christopher Street Day (CSD). Around 250,000 people demonstrated in perfect weather.
The demo with 130 groups, including 59 trucks, started at walking pace at 11:55 a.m. on Mundsburger Damm. The route was changed this year because the old starting point on Lange Reihe was too narrow due to the increased number of participants. In the morning, the first participants gathered on Mundsburger Damm with numerous flags and balloons in rainbow colors to promote diversity. Many companies are also taking part in the parade this year with their own trucks. “We want to make our contribution to diversity,” said one participant, who is riding in the truck of an aviation technology company, to NDR 90.3. Manuel Opitz from the organizing association Hamburg Pride said: “It’s a great feeling for us to actually be supported by the whole of the city’s society.”
Fegebank: Wind gets rougher
This year’s motto for the Hamburg Pride is “5 to 12! You and I against right-wing pressure.” This is no coincidence, said Hamburg’s Deputy Mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens), who also took part in the demonstration: “We notice, of course, that the wind is getting a little rougher, in Europe, but also here.” There is a strengthening of right-wing populist movements that are annoyed that everyone lives freely, equally and self-determined and want to curtail and roll back the rights of queer people.
New demo route: From Uhlenhorst to the city centre
The new route leads from Uhlenhorst through the city center (Mundsburger Damm – Schwanenwik – An der Alster – Lohmühlenstraße – Lange Reihe – Kirchenallee – Ernst-Merck-Straße – Glockengießerwall – Steintorwall – Mönckebergstraße – Bergstraße). The destination is Jungfernstieg. The police recommend traveling by subway, S-Bahn, bicycle or on foot. Drivers should avoid the area.
Dyke March for Lesbian Rights
The first demonstration took place on Friday to mark the CSD: According to police, around 1,700 people marched from Gänsemarkt to Reeperbahn during the Dyke March. The demonstration was about the rights of lesbian women. “Dykes” was originally a derogatory term for homosexual women that was appropriated by the lesbian movement. Hamburg’s Deputy Mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens) also marched.
Demo for CSD in Hamburg since 1980
Christopher Street Day commemorates June 28, 1969, when police stormed the New York gay and lesbian bar “Stonewall Inn” on Christopher Street, sparking protests by gays, lesbians and transsexuals that lasted several days. The CSD is intended to draw attention to the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex and queer people. Since 1980, people have taken to the streets in Hamburg every year to campaign for acceptance and equality for all sexualities and gender identities.
