Silent message in the cornfield does not reach everyone

High-tech was used for the lettering “Your regional farmers”. Farmer Markus Läpple wanted to make a statement with it, but the plan didn’t quite work out.

The farmers’ protests at the beginning of the year have largely fizzled out, says Markus Läpple, a farmer from Ilsfeld (Heilbronn district). Too much is being said about farmers and too little with them. In addition, too little has been done after the many promises made during the protests. With the message “Your regional farmers” in one of his corn fields, he wants to draw attention to the situation of farmers. Because the promises made by politicians have not been fulfilled.

The population should appreciate the work of farmers and understand that they produce food for regional trade and make a contribution to society, explained Läpple.

We are here, we are in the region, we produce food, we produce energy. We are there, we look after the landscape, we supply you with food and that is actually the goal.

Läpple: Disappointed by politics

After the extensive protests at the beginning of the year, too little has been done, said Läpple. The promises made during the farmers’ protests have not been kept. He had hoped for tax relief and a reduction in bureaucracy, but has not noticed any changes so far.

The lettering in the middle of the cornfield is easy to see with the drone. SWR

Planning errors and modern technology

Läpple used high-tech to ensure that the message was clearly visible in the cornfield. Instead of trampling plants, the letters were determined when the seeds were sown. The shape of the letters was simply left out. The technology is actually used to adapt the seeds to different soil conditions, for example, but it can also be used to create lettering or labyrinths in a field, explains Läpple.

Message is not as visible as hoped

At the moment, the lettering in the field is still very clearly visible, but mainly from the air. Läpple actually wanted the silent message to be seen from the nearby, busy road. But since the corn has grown higher, the angle is no longer right, which is why the letters are hardly recognizable. He will learn from this next time, says Läpple, grinning.

The message will not be visible for long anyway. In the autumn, the corn will be harvested and used in the nearby biogas plant.
