Hello, everyone. When the Super League came out, I was thinking of a better format, also because I think the format of the new Champions League is crap.
Until the group stage, leave the Champions League as it was until now, so there would be 32, with 32 teams making a Play Off and 16 teams remaining for the final round and the losers go to the Europa League.
Now the group stage of 16 would begin, two groups of 8 each.
2 from each group advance to the next round and 4 from each group would go to the Play Off from which 4 teams would emerge.
And finally there would be the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. It could be suggested that the final would be held in the stadium of the reigning champion, therefore next year’s final would be held at the Bernabéu.
For the Europa League it would be the same as the Champions League.
For the Conference League another different one:
Same as the others but there would be 4 groups of 8 each, 4 from each group would go on to the next round.
And finally there would be the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
The group matches would be on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, regardless of the competition, so there could be a Champions League on Thursday or a Conference on Tuesday.
To all this I would add the reduction of teams in the leagues to a maximum of 16, therefore 30 matches per season, I would also force the cups to be a single match in all rounds. In addition, I would also reduce the international break by eliminating the Euro and World Cup qualifiers, meaning that qualification for the Euro and World Cup would be entirely through the Nations League. The number of breaks would have to be studied but they would probably be one at the end of the season and another at the end of the year. During the breaks, 2 to 3 games could be played, for example for the 2026 World Cup, there would be 3 games in the November-December 2024 break and another 3 games in the June-July 2025 break, therefore there would be a final break in November-December 2025 in which the Play-Offs could be played.
With this format, you keep the competition open because it would be like the Champions League and you also add the Super League format (2 groups of 8), which from my point of view is better than the current Champions League. It is not that difficult, in the Women’s Champions League they already have 4 groups of 4 teams, that is to say it is quite similar to the format I propose.
