Middle East: Iran Seeks Traitors – US Prepares – 2024-08-03 08:47:27

The movements taking place inside Iran confirm the scenario that the assassination of Ismail Haniya was finally done with a bomb and not with a missile. For this reason, the Iranians are thoroughly examining their internal security and making mass arrests.

The Iranian authorities are looking for the security gaps that allowed such a strike in Tehran and of course the people who helped to carry it out. At least that’s according to a new New York Times report citing two Iranian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The key questions about Iran’s strong reaction

  • Why do Iranians react like this: Haniya’s closeness to Iran’s supreme leader – with the two men meeting at Khamenei’s residence just hours before the assassination – is seen as a clear blow to Iranian prestige. Especially since the attack happened in Tehran.
  • What they are looking to find: A separate team of agents interrogated senior military and intelligence officials with a role in guarding the capital. He placed several of them in custody pending investigations, according to the two Iranians.
  • Why they are looking among senior officers: Apparently they feel that some of them did not do their job properly or even helped in the attack. After all, news of the sweeping arrests came after the Revolutionary Guards announced that “the scope and details of this incident are being investigated and will be announced in due course.”

Scan checks and change security protocols

“This breach of security requires different policies and strategies – it can be arresting spies if there was infiltration, or retaliation if the operation was conducted from abroad, or a combination of both.”Sasan Karimi, a political analyst in Tehran, said in a telephone interview.

For this reason Iran’s security services have been put on red alert looking for answers in every possible way. They have already thoroughly examined the hostel where the murderous attack on Haniya took place and taken footage from the cameras.

The staff has also become the focus of the investigations, while a check was made for possible suspects and on the list of those who have visited Iran recently. Notably, according to the New Yorke Times report, Iran believes that members of the Mossad’s assassination team are still in the country and their goal is to capture them.

At the same time a member of the Revolutionary Guards noted that security protocols had been completely revised in the last two days for senior officials. All this while of course considering the retaliation.

The US is strengthening its forces

The US Department of Defense announced yesterday Friday the deployment of additional forces in the Middle East region, where warships and fighter jets are rushing, following threats from Iran and its allies Hamas and Hezbollah.

US military forces have been put on high alert following Iran’s threats to retaliate for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya in Tehran days ago, as the war in the Gaza Strip rages on.

Similar measures were also taken in early April, before the missile and drone attack launched by Iran on 4/13 against Israel. But this time, in a possible combined attack by Hezbollah from Lebanon, the mission of US forces to intercept missiles and drones will be even more difficult given the pro-Iranian group’s large arsenal and proximity to Israel.

On April 13, Israel announced that it had shot down nearly 300 drones and missiles with the help of the US and other allies.
