Swiss holidays: ecotourism, to go far with your head held high

And are you more of a Bains des Pâquis or a swim in Bali? A hike in Arolla or Arizona? All week long, a close-up on the Swiss holidays.

«Mora Morait means “We have time, we are not in a hurry”, in Madagascar. I chose this name for my ecotourism agency because it is a different pace for a vacation, for a trip. I am 63 years old, I am a biologist by training, I was going to start a thesis on zooplankton at the University of Geneva… And then, I went to Madagascar on vacation with my partner at the time, who needed sun; I stayed there for ten years… After a chance encounter with a bush taxi and a lot of dreams, we set up a small camp of huts on the tiny island of Sakatia for a simple vacation. We dug to get water, we tried solar energy – it was not as efficient as today… But there was the primary forest, the mangrove, and the turtles 300 meters away. At the time there were only two diving clubs on site… Today, the place has been taken over and the bungalows have been upgraded; I organize trips on site, participatory science stays, I have been in this field for about thirty-five years – well before we talked about “sustainable”, intelligent travel. I have really seen the awareness of people looking for more authentic experiences, closer to nature, who want to do something more, who are concerned about the environment; for twenty years, there have been many more possibilities.

La science participativeit is citizen science, as in the reef checkwhere the coral watch. We examine coral bleaching, we take measurements, we map it, and all this data is then integrated into a large online project available to researchers, in this case that of the Australian University of Queensland. These observations can even be made with fins and a snorkel, and by going for two weeks, we can really contribute something. But given the length and cost of the trip (yes, by plane…), many people go for longer, people who have the time, young people who are doing a baccalaureate outside the walls… I myself took part in the trip of the Swiss sailing ship Fleur de passion to Australia, a few years ago.
