Heavy rain and gusts of wind: Over 400 Salzburg firefighters on storm duty

A violent storm with storms, thunderstorms and heavy rain hit the state of Salzburg on Thursday afternoon – and it also rained in many places during the night. Salzburg’s volunteer fire brigades were in constant use. The first alarms came in at around 3:45 p.m., a spokesman for the state fire brigade association told S24. A total of 408 firefighters from 18 fire brigades were dispatched to over 40 operations in all districts except for the district of Flachgau. Trees fell in the storm, rocks came loose and cellars flooded, to give just a small insight. Small mudslides also occurred.

Several missions in Lungau

In the Lungau region, the municipality of Mauterndorf was the most affected. “Starting with water entering a shop in the market area, the number of emergency sites increased as the storm intensified throughout the entire local area,” the fire department said.

The Steindorf district was particularly affected by a blockage in the Steindorfer Graben. Several houses were pumped out and secured with sandbags and formwork panels. The blockage was cleared using a wooden crane. In addition, several small blockages in the local area were cleared and an agricultural area was freed from the water masses.

Trees and rocks fell onto roads

In Goldegg in Pongau, trees and rocks fell onto several streets, which had to be cleared by the fire service. The Grossarl state road was closed for about four hours after a mudslide.
