On Tuesday, Roman Mityukov celebrated his 24th birthday. Two days later – just in time for the Swiss national holiday – the Genevan gave himself a present. And a real one. Mityukov swam to bronze in the Olympic final of the 200 m backstroke in the Arena La Défense.
For Mityukov, it was a medal with a promise in Paris: After the best time in the preliminary rounds and second place in the semifinals, he could have flirted with the idea of a medal. And the backstroke specialist withstood the pressure. In the final, he only had to give way to the Hungarian Hubert Kos (1:54.26 minutes), who had already been the best in the semifinals, and the surprising Greek Apostolos Christou.
In an illustrious group
As usual, the 24-year-old started slower than the competition. After the first turn in the 50-meter pool, Mityukov was only in 6th place, at half-time he was in 4th place and after 150 meters he was in 5th place. But in the last length, the Genevan turned on the turbo and secured bronze in a new Swiss record time of 1:54.85 minutes. He beat his old best time by almost half a second. He was only 3 hundredths away from silver.
Mityukov’s medal in the water was a rare one for Switzerland: Noè Ponti (bronze in the 100 m butterfly) and Jérémy Desplanches (bronze in the 200 m individual medley) had won medals in Tokyo. Before that, only Etienne Dagon had achieved this with bronze in the 200 m breaststroke in Los Angeles in 1984.
For the Swiss delegation in the French capital, it was the 3rd medal in total: Previously, Shooter Audrey Gogniat (bronze) and triathlete Julie Derron (silver) can celebrate.
