A few days after the European Football Championship, anticipation is growing for the start of the Bundesliga: From an Upper Austrian perspective, this year is particularly interesting because for the first time in history, two teams from Linz will be competing in both the top men’s and women’s leagues. “The red-white-red national team’s performance at the European Championship in Germany has also sparked a wave of enthusiasm in Upper Austria – which makes me all the more pleased that football fans are getting their money’s worth here too. For four Upper Austrian teams, the kick-off to a Bundesliga season will soon sound, which has many exciting games in store for the fans – including the eagerly awaited local derbies,” says Markus Achleitner, State Councilor for Economic Affairs and Sport.
The fact that after Upper Austria’s long-standing flagship in women’s football, Union Kleinmünchen, which has been joining forces with Blau-Weiß Linz since 2021, LASK has now also been promoted to Austria’s top division with its women’s team, is evidence that women’s football is developing splendidly. Audience interest is also growing. Football fans can therefore look forward to exciting championship duels in the country’s top division in the two state-of-the-art arenas in the state capital, not only for the men, but also for the women for the first time.
Markus Achleitner is already looking ahead to the autumn of football: “We are proud that we will be able to welcome the ÖFB national team to the Raiffeisen Arena twice in October for the Nations League games against Kazakhstan and Norway, including superstar Erling Haaland. Ralf Rangnick’s team will once again receive special support from the stands in Linz – as was the case at the European Championships.”
