Haniye, who permanently resided in Qatar, arrived in Iran for the inauguration of new President Masoud Peshehkian. His deathaccording to the Al-Qassam Brigades, marks a turning point and could entail “grave consequences” for the entire Middle East.

Hamas is an armed Islamist movement that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007. The organization is designated a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, and the European Union. The war in the Gaza Strip has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, following a series of attacks on Israel.

The foreign ministries of Egypt and Qatar, which together with the U.S. brokering ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas, say Hani’s killing undermines those efforts. Hanije was involved in these talks.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani criticizes Israel for “political assassinations and continuous attacks on civilians in Gaza.” In his opinion, peace requires “serious partners” and Israel shows “lack of political will” to calm the situation.
