Health authorities in Mexico have warned of an increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. According to the Weekly COVID-19 Report, from June 30 to July 6, 2024, cases increased by 28%, raising alarm among the population.
Although positive cases remain below those reported in previous weeks, the upward trend is worrying, especially when compared to the figures for 2023. So far this year, 8,075 positive cases and 375 deaths from COVID-19 have been confirmed in Mexico.
Which states have seen an increase in COVID-19?
The states with the highest increase in COVID-19 cases are:
- Mexico City
- Querétaro
- Mexico state
- New Lion
- Puebla
Who should get vaccinated again against COVID-19?
Authorities reiterate the importance of vaccination as a fundamental measure to prevent the disease. A booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for the following groups:
- People over 50 years old
- Overweight people
- People with chronic diseases
- Pregnant women
- Health personnel
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Although there are several variants of the virus, the symptoms of COVID-19 remain very similar:
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
- Fatigue
In more severe cases, patients may experience:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Low oxygenation (below 90 with oximeter)
In light of the increase in cases, health authorities are calling on the population not to let down their guard and to continue taking preventive measures:
- Frequent hand washing
- Use of face masks in closed and crowded spaces
- Maintain adequate ventilation in indoor spaces
- Social distancing
- Complete vaccination against COVID-19
