On Monday afternoon, a 44-year-old Finnish man was found drowned in the harbor basin of Pärnu’s yacht harbor. The finding of the man had been preceded by a day-long search, for which the local authorities had finally asked the residents of Pärnu for help through the media.
The Finnish man was staying in his boat, which is quite a large vessel, more than nine meters long, at the marina. He drowned in the immediate vicinity of his boat.
Manager of the Pärnu marina hotel Merilin Kubar says that the Finnish man and his companions had already come to Pärnu on their boat on Thursday, July 25. The Finnish couple was supposed to continue their journey on their boat from Pärnu to Haapsalu.
The Finnish man was finally found in the port pool by local maritime rescue and border inspection officials who had participated in the search.
Camera surveillance
According to the Pärnu police, a 44-year-old Finnish man was in Pärnu on vacation with his Finnish friend or spouse. This female friend or spouse had reported the man missing on Sunday afternoon and was notified that he had been found immediately on Monday afternoon.
The exact time of discovery of the body was on Monday at 1:25 p.m.
The Finnish man’s body is currently at the Estonian Institute of Forensic Medicine, where an autopsy will be performed. Only after the autopsy, the body can be picked up from Estonia to Finland.
According to the Estonian police, there are no traces of a crime on the body and it seems that the Finnish man has fallen into the water as a result of an accident. The purpose of the autopsy is to ascertain the Finn’s cause of death.
According to the police, there is camera surveillance in the event area in the port and its surroundings, and the police have already had access to the camera recordings.
Nightlife hub
The last sighting of the Finnish man was on Sunday night at 1 o’clock in the center of Pärnu on Supeluse-katu. In summer, Supeluse-katu and its surroundings are the center of Pärnu’s nightlife, with restaurants and bars open until the wee hours.
The distance to the yacht harbor from Supeluse-katu is only about a kilometer as the crow flies.
At the time of the observation, the Finnish man had apparently already been on his way to his boat in the marina and his traveling partner who was waiting there.
It is very difficult for someone caught in the water in the harbor basin to push himself back to dry land, especially in the dark, and if he is not familiar with the basin and its surroundings. After falling into the pool, the Finn had apparently drowned immediately.

Finns have drowned in Pärnu before. In the summer of 2020, an 80-year-old Finnish man drowned at the beach in Pärnu, and in the summer of 2003, a Finnish man drowned after going swimming near the Pärnu bridge.
