Mitsotakis against Mitsotakis: “The citizen cannot pay for the malfunctions of the energy market” – 2024-07-31 03:16:59

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking to the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou in the framework of their monthly formal meeting at the Presidential Palace, probably forgot that he is the Prime Minister and proceeded to make statements, as if he were exercising the role of “opposition officer”.

Characteristically, speaking about the high electricity prices, he mentioned how “the Greek consumer cannot pay for any malfunctions in an energy market”, supplementing that “at any moment the government will be ready to intervene when market distortions and profits are identified which are not justified by the smooth operation of the wholesale electricity market”.

Except that the specific problems of profiteering in electricity did not arise in the last few weeks, on the contrary, they have been bringing society to its knees for a very long time, with the government not having found a definitive solution.

“Encouraging signs of tackling punctuality”

The prime minister did not only talk about high electricity prices, but also about the major issue of accuracy, where he expressed optimism that significant steps are being taken to address it.

In particular, he noted that “I want you to know that the government’s attention remains on the price taming front. The indications we have are encouraging that in the month of June there was also a relative de-escalation of prices in supermarkets. I believe that the overall network of measures taken by the government has begun to pay off and of course we are continuing with controls from the DIMEA side throughout the supply chain but also by strengthening more the Competition Commission which is, according to the laws, in charge of identifying concentration phenomena in the market which lead to oligopolistic situations which in turn can lead to an increase in prices”.

It is recalled that in an interview last year (18/10/23) with Ant1, Kyriakos Mitsotakis had stated about the multinationals that sell more expensive products in Greece that “if they think that Greece is a banana, they are very funny”.

Nine months later, the government has not only not taken any substantial measures to address the accuracy, but it is finding market problems, which it said a year ago. It is clear that in “everyday agenda” it has failed miserably, having driven citizens into despair.
