Statistics that prove a rebound are hard to come by: the number of people collecting unemployment insurance doubled in the first half of the year, in the middle of a long-term recession and despite the official debate. In the first six months of the year, according to official figures, 98,703 people lost their registered employment for no reason attributable to the employee and started collecting insurance or Unemployment Benefit.
This year’s registrations doubled compared to the same period in 2023 (which had been 49,910 and the monthly average of 64,457 people). Therefore, the monthly average of people covered by this insurance rose to 111,851 people. Of this total number, 84,372 are men and 27,479 are women. And the monthly salary they receive is only 182,858 pesos per month, according to official figures.
Of the 98,703 registrations experienced in the first semester, the largest number occurred in the construction sector (36,488 workers), then in the manufacturing industry (19,532), trade (15,389), administrative activities (6,768) , transport services (3,753), food and accommodation (3,268) and finally health and social services (2,708).
The people who can collect unemployment insurance are those who were dismissed without reason, as a result of the termination of a contract or for reasons outside the employee who was in a relationship of trust. While they collect this insurance – for up to twelve months – they also receive family allowances and continue the coverage of the social work to which they are connected. The months in which the benefit is received are counted as seniority for retirement or pension.
An important requirement is that you have had at least 6 months of work with grants in the last 3 years before the contract was dismissed or terminated. In the case of casual and seasonal workers, the requirement is to have worked less than 12 months in the last 3 years and more than 90 days in the last year, before the work was completed.
The amount and number of installments (between 2 and 12) are calculated according to income and months worked (with contributions) in the last 3 years. Workers older than 45 years earn 6 months more.
Last year, the Council on minimum wage established that the unemployment benefit must be equal to 75 percent of the best wage for the worker in the 6 months before the end of the job, but she also clarified with intent that “the monthly benefit cannot be under any circumstances. less than 50 percent of the living and moving minimum wage or more than 100 percent.” In May and June the SMVM was set at 234,315 and in July it rose to 254,241 pesos, the benefit of -average earnings of 182,858 per month.
