Paris, July 30 (EFE).- With a Kenyan father, a Mexican mother, and raised in London, Prisca Awiti Alcaraz has written herself into the history of Mexican judo. Her silver medal in the -63 kg category at the recent Games was a first for the country in this sport.
Awiti Alcaraz’s achievement is all the more remarkable given that she almost gave up judo when she found her weight category too competitive in the UK. Instead, she embraced the opportunity to represent Mexico—a country with which she had little familiarity beyond her mother’s heritage—and quickly obtained citizenship.
Since 2017, she has worn Mexican colors on the international stage and achieved numerous accolades, including gold medals at the Pan American Games. Her favorite technique, the Seoi-Otoshi throw, has served her well, as has her determination and role model older brother, also a successful judoka.
Beyond the tatami, Awiti Alcaraz advocates for Mexican women’s empowerment, recognizing that the country’s culture is slowly evolving towards greater gender equality. She notes with pride how some men are taking on more equitable domestic roles.
