Gálvez will call for mobilization if overrepresentation in Congress is not stopped

Mexico City. Former opposition presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez said that if the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) do not make a “broader interpretation” of the law to stop the alleged overrepresentation of Morena and its allies in the House, she will call on citizens to “mobilize” on this issue.

After participating in a press conference by the elected mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, the senator was questioned by the media about the allegations made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador that the opposition has implemented a “campaign” on the issue of overrepresentation to prevent the majority party from obtaining a qualified majority in San Lázaro.

“There is a thesis by Olga Sánchez Cordero (retired Supreme Court minister) that the spirit of the Constitution is that the parties are duly represented. When this reform was made, there were no (electoral) alliances, so we will let the courts interpret,” he said.

However, Gálvez considered that currently “the vote of someone who voted for this alliance that I led is worth less than the one who voted for Morena, and that is a violation of human rights. We are going to fight and we are going to fight hard.”

After emphasizing that Morena and its allies “do not deserve” the qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies, because they did not obtain the necessary votes for it, he asked the TEPJF to make a “broader interpretation” of the law on overrepresentation. He also recalled that López Obrador “challenged this same issue when he was in opposition,” so he asked him to be open to analyzing it now that he is in government.

– Do you trust that the INE and then the Court will correctly interpret the Constitution and not benefit Morena?, he was asked.

– If they go with a broader criterion, they would not have to benefit anyone, but rather apply that criterion of proportionality of the votes obtained by each alliance. They (Morena and their allies) obtained 54 percent of the votes and deserve 54 percent of the seats.

– Do you have confidence in the INE and the Court?

– I hope so, that they can have a broader interpretation by listening to the same theses of those who are in government today.

– What would happen otherwise?

– We citizens are going to mobilize.

– Would it mobilize citizens?

– Yeah
