Maradona’s jersey worn at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico is up for auction

Moscow. The shirt worn by Argentine Diego Armando Maradona in the semi-finals of the 1986 World Cup has gone up for auction, according to the website of the auction house Sotheby’s.

“Held at Mexico City’s historic Azteca Stadium on June 25, 1986 with nearly 115,000 fans, the 1986 World Cup semi-final match between Argentina and Belgium pitted two of the world’s best teams against each other in search of a place in the final,” the statement said.

After the semi-finals, the Argentine striker exchanged shirts with the Belgian team’s goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff. Since then, Maradona’s shirt has remained with the goalkeeper.

During the match, Argentina beat Belgium 2-0 thanks to two goals from Maradona and moved on to the Cup final, where they defeated Germany 3-2, becoming world champions for the second time.

The auction for the Argentine footballer’s shirt will end on August 2. The starting price of the lot is 700 thousand dollars.

Sotheby’s estimates the shirt’s value at between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

In May 2022, the auction house sold Maradona’s jersey from the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England, during which the athlete scored two goals, including one that was called ‘The Hand of God’ and another ‘the Goal of the Century’, for $9.3 million.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 in a house in the private neighborhood of San Andrés, in Tigre, Argentina.

The International Football Federation recognized the Argentine as the best footballer of the 20th century.
