The United States hopes to see “concrete results” from the independent investigation commissioned by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to the former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna into the workers involved in the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7.
“From the American perspective, we hope to see concrete results from these approaches and while we will continue to consult closely with other donors on how to continue meeting the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza,” State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said at a press conference.
Likewise, Patel explained that the Biden Administration is debating the different options to provide funds to help the population in the Gaza Strip through other organizations, such as the World Food Program (WFP) or the United Nations Children’s Fund. (UNICEF).
The State Department spokesperson has also referred to the bill being debated in Congress for 100 billion dollars (93 million euros) on humanitarian aid, both for Ukraine and the Middle East, with a clause that prevents said funds are diverted to UNRWA.
“In this pending legislation there are 10 billion dollars for humanitarian aid, of which 1.4 billion are for humanitarian aid to Gaza,” he indicated, also adding that the United States has been “unequivocal” with the “critical work carried out by UNRWA.” not only in Gaza, but in other parts of the region.
The former French Foreign Minister will lead a group outside the United Nations in which the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Sweden, the Chr. Michelsen Institute of Norway and the Danish Institute for Human Rights will also participate. They will begin their work on February 14 and will deliver a first analysis to Guterres at the end of March, according to a statement from the secretary general’s office.
