European Stroke Day 2024: Albert Schweitzer Hospital Urges Immediate Recognition and Treatment of Stroke

DORDRECHT / SLIEDRECHT – Today is May 14, 2024, European Stroke Day. On this day, the Albert Schweitzer hospital, among others, draws additional attention to the recognition and treatment of stroke.

In 2022, stroke will be the third leading cause of death in the Netherlands. Around 25 people die from it every day in our country.

A stroke is a cardiovascular disease. In a stroke, a blood vessel in the brain is blocked (cerebral stroke) or broken (cerebral hemorrhage). This needs to be recognized and treated immediately. So do not hesitate, but call 112 immediately if you experience one or more of the symptoms listed below.

Mouth, speech, arm: stroke alarm!
The most common sudden symptoms experienced in a stroke are a crooked mouth, slurred speech, paralyzed arm or leg, double vision and loss of balance. If such complaints occur, it is very important to contact 112 immediately. Stroke patients have a better chance of recovery if they get the right care soon after symptoms start. The sooner treatment begins, the more brain tissue can be saved: time is in the brain! Less damage means less (permanent) complaints. So a stroke is an emergency. Control room 112 can estimate the severity and send an ambulance if necessary. Do not hesitate, call!

A healthier lifestyle reduces risk
Whether the complaints disappear after a stroke and after treatment and how quickly this happens varies from person to person and depends on the damage that has occurred in the brain. Sometimes there are no symptoms left at all. Rehabilitation can support recovery and teach the patient to cope with the consequences of the stroke. The aim is for someone to be able to resume their pre-stroke life as much as possible: physically, socially and emotionally. It is even better to avoid a stroke. The risk can be reduced by living a healthy lifestyle. This means: don’t smoke, use alcohol in moderation, lose weight if you are overweight, exercise every day and avoid stress.
