The energy crisis on the Island appears to be much worse than expected, as the country suffered blackouts throughout Wednesday, May 8 after experiencing a deficit of more than 1,200 MW at peak hour.
These effects came after the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE) only forecast a lack of 800 MW during the busiest time on the Islandmaking it clear that the authorities do not have a true idea about the seriousness of the situation.
According to the UNE report shared this Thursday, May 9, the Island experienced a deficit of 1,268 MW around 8:50 pm, after having calculated a lack of only 810 MW. This represents more than 400 additional MW, 50% more than the amount initially calculated.
In that sense, it would not be a surprise to many if the situation were to repeat itself during the day this Thursday, since the UNE estimates that there will be a deficit of 750 MW during the day and 1,010 MW during peak hours.
“The availability of the SEN at 07:00 hours is 1,970 MW and the demand is 2,450 MW, with 500 MW affected by a deficit in generation capacity, a maximum impact of 750 MW is estimated during daytime hours,” the statement reads. part of the UNE.
The information shared by the Cuban authorities this Thursday indicates that there is a Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE) out of service due to breakdowns: unit 2 of the Felton CTE, however, five blocks of the Santa Cruz, Nuevitas, Mariel and Felton CTE They are out for “maintenance.”
Additionally, unit 5 of the Nuevitas CTE is out of service due to lack of water, while 38 distributed generation plants, which are equivalent to a contribution of 338 MW, are out of service due to lack of fuel.
“With this forecast, an availability of 2,210 MW and a maximum demand of 3,150 MW is estimated for peak hour, for a deficit of 940 MW, so if the forecast conditions continue, an impact of 1,010 MW is forecast during this time” , concludes the official note.
As expected, the news generated discontent among Internet users, many of whom criticized the Castro government for denying the serious situation in the country.
“And we reached a thousand, and we overachieved… Let’s go for more”; “’We already have 1,000 and we are going for more successes’… Tremendous strategy and planning” and “We returned to the thousands, I wish those thousands were in all areas, economy, food and health,” were some of the comments that sarcastically mocked of Castro’s propaganda.
