On May 3, a career day was held at Gargždų “Kranto” pro-gymnasium. It was visited by former classmates from Gargždi, who have remained friends to this day, Algis Latakas, general director of the Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, and Alvydas Jokubaitis, philosopher, doctor of humanities, professor, academician.
Students of grades 5-8 participated in the meeting with the guests, who with their achievements already aim to develop professional orientation, conscious choice of profession, consistently and purposefully develop engineering competence. Secondary school students have won first and second prizes in the A. Ivanauskas team math problem solving competition, first place in the informatics and informational thinking competition “Bebras”, second stage in the international mathematics competition “Pangea”, 5th-8th grades of the Western Lithuania region. 3rd place in the students’ Olympiad, two 1st places and 3rd place in the Klaipėda District Mathematics Olympiad, 17th Lithuanian 5-8th grade. 1st place in the Biology Olympiad. Students purposefully go to classes at the STEM center in Taurage, robotics classes are regularly held at the institution, and they participate in research activities and scientific conferences.
At the meeting, the honored guests A. Latakas and A. Jokubaitis opened a box of memories from their school days, which is more than 40 years old. A. Latakas, pointing to the stage of the assembly hall, mentioned the music ensemble that he had assembled and in which he played with like-minded people. And in order to play, it was necessary to find and listen to various songs (since then a hobby – collecting vinyls). Another youthful hobby – driving his parents’ car at night – did not go in vain, it helped him become a silver medal winner of the rally championship, a master of sports. A. Jokubaitis admitted that he is communicating with such a young audience for the first time, as his listeners are usually students. He admitted that history teacher I. Kalvaitienė of bright memory contributed to his path as a philosopher, and joked that high school students are still interested in philosophy early. The students were given the task of guessing what kuunke is, what is the favorite dish of the director general of the Klaipėda State Seaport Directorate. The students named the place where the philosopher received his First Communion.
The names of the teachers who worked at the school came to life on the lips of the guests, memories of how they were on duty at the canteen, how they let each other into the canteen outside of their break. By the way, after the meeting with the students, it was suggested to go to the canteen, choose the desired dish and have lunch together.
The guests viewed the Lighthouses Exhibition dedicated to 2024. For the year of lighthouses (they chose the ones they liked the most), which was initiated by technology teacher Vytautas Brazauskas, who made 130 lighthouses with his students. Part of Švyturii will go to the exhibition in Klaipėda, part to Ventės raga. The general director was impressed by the performances of the high school dance group “Skraja” (dance teacher Vaida Zacharevičienė). While saying goodbye, he promised that he would invite the collective to a concert in Klaipėda on the pier, and the high school students to go on educational trips to get to know the Klaipėda seaport.
It was good to watch how A. Latakas and A. Jokubaitis, former friends of Gargžda 2nd secondary school with mischievous wits, enjoyed the school (in A. Jokubaitis’ memory it remains the best school) and just being around. We are happy and proud that the guests who visited us for one lesson became beacons helping to find the way to the career port.
