Slovenian Tade Pogačar, rider of the UAE team, won his third victory in the “Prati di Tivo” stage in the “Giro da Italia”, ahead of Daniel Martinez (Team Bora Hasengrohe) and Ben O’Connor (Dekathlon AG2R).
The 8th stage extended from Spoleto and ended with a finish line at the top of Prati di Tifo (14.7 km long with a gradual increase of 7%) The riders competed over a distance of 152 km, which took into the two rising sides, Forca Capistrillo (2nd division) and Croce Appio (3rd division).
The UAE team was able to maintain perfect control over the main group of 14 riders, which it gained around two minutes at most, and was able to gradually close the gap from the front of the race on the last climb.
Felix Grochartner and Rafal Majka set the pace for the race which led to a group of the top 12 riders falling behind, paving the way for a series of attack attempts by Pogacar’s opponents, to which the owner of the unstoppable pink jersey before winning the race with the start.
It should be noted that the Slovenian rider leads the general classification with a time difference of 2 minutes and 40 seconds from Daniel Martinez and is still leading in the road uphill classification.
“When everyone took a little rest but me and Mikkel Berg,” said Pogacar, “my teammates felt good today, and they did a good job at the start of the stage, and they were able to hold onto the first climb as almost the whole team finished in front of the group. It was up to the team.” Whether we can win the stage or not, and they were in good condition so we were able to achieve a good finish… very happy with this victory and the great level that showed the whole team.”
It should also be noted that the ninth stage is the longest in the Giro, stretching over a distance of 214 km, starting from Avezzano and ending in Naples with a final section on the mountains.
