The Starlink satellite system, which provides broadband satellite Internet service, is currently experiencing connection problems, the company reported this Saturday on its website.
Starlink is owned by SpaceX, and CEO Elon Musk explained that the failures were caused by a severe geomagnetic solar storm. «Large geomagnetic solar storm right now. The biggest in a long time. “Starlink satellites are under a lot of pressure, but so far they are holding firm,” reads the tweet from the American billionaire of South African origin.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it is the first time since 2005 that a severe solar storm has occurred.
In February, a strong class X solar flare occurred, causing a blackout of high-frequency radio communications in much of the southern hemisphere.
