Ecuador will not insist on legalizing hourly contracts – 2024-05-12 00:11:27

The government of Ecuador will not insist on its proposals to legalize hourly labor contracts and to allow international arbitration in any jurisdiction, the two questions that were rejected in the referendum held on April 21, where the Executive received broad support for its proposals to strengthen the fight against organized crime.

“We believe that the people’s pronouncement has to be respected”stated this Tuesday the Vice Minister of Government, Esteban Torresin an interview with radio i99, from Guayaquil.

With hourly work, the President’s Executive Daniel Noboa It sought to encourage job creation, especially among young people, and with the proposal of international arbitrations, now limited by the Constitution to venues only in Latin America, it was intended to be a factor in attracting private foreign investment.

Regarding the security reforms that must be processed in the National AssemblyTorres warned that the Government will remain vigilant.

Specifically, he mentioned the measure to toughen penalties for crimes related to organized crime, as he stated that “certain legislators seek to include other issues in the process of the legal reforms that the Executive will propose.”

This is in reference to a recent bill to reform the Ecuadorian penal code, which was paralyzed after consensus was broken in the Assembly by introducing Citizen revolutionthe political formation of the former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), points that other groups considered could open the door to a review of the former president’s sentence.

The vice minister recalled that an overwhelming majority voted for ‘Yes’ on the questions related to the toughening of sentences, the fulfillment of the entire sentence for certain crimes, the classification of the crime of carrying weapons for the exclusive use of law enforcement forces. , and the delivery of confiscated weapons to the National Police and to the Armed forces.

In this sense, Torres highlighted that the consultation constitutes an express process to address these issues within a maximum period of 60 days, for which the President of the Republic, Daniel Noboa, must send the corresponding bills to the Assembly.

«Including topics that were not supported in the consultation would be a disregard for the popular mandate. We are going to be vigilant that this does not happen. I hope there is seriousness on the part of the Assembly”Torres emphasized.

In an interview with EFE after the referendum, Correa assured that the Citizen Revolution bench will support the security initiatives out of respect for the result of the vote, although Correism announced total opposition to Noboa since the assault on the Embassy of Mexico in Quito to arrest the former Correísta vice president Jorge Glas.
