The increase in prices in some segments of the tourism sector is only temporary, as it is related to factors such as greater demand, salary increases, among others, so it should not be seen as something negative, said the president of the Confederation. of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur), Octavio de la Torre de Stéffano.
In interview with The Conferencethe leader of tertiary activities – which contributes two thirds of the economy -, recalled that data released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), indicate that in the first half of April, inflation was 4.48 percent , a level that is still far from the goal of the Bank of Mexico (BdeM), which is 3 percent with an interval of one percentage point up or down.
The leader of the business organization commented that tourist services in particular have shown an increase in prices in the last fortnights, mainly due to factors such as greater demand due to the Easter holiday period, but also as a temporary effect of the 20 percent increase. cent to the general minimum wage (SMG).
“There are certain sectors that have suffered an increase greater than that established in inflation. There are segments or sectors, for example, tourism or transportation have had increases above inflation itself and that is also linked, of course, to the increase in the minimum wage,” he said.
He pointed out that this factor has influenced the tourism sector because the main capital is human, so salary increases also imply higher costs for services in this economic activity, as well as greater contributions that have to be covered.
In March, air transport prices observed a monthly variation of 28.35 percent, while in the case of package tourism services they increased 7.23 percent.
However, in the first half of April, Inegi reported that these same segments showed a reduction of 12.75 and 0.89 percent fortnightly, respectively.
De la Torre de Stéffano commented that the greater demand for tourist services in the country has also influenced prices.
“This increase that is visualized or reported is linked to supply and demand, there are times when economic activity is saturated because there is greater demand and that too, because it generates peaks,” he said.
“We have an increase in travelers and visitors in terms of tourism and they are focused on other types of tourism, you already have business tourism, health tourism, adventure tourism, religious tourism, archaeological tourism, unknown places tourism, gastronomic tourism, so the diversity and the mosaic of flavors and sensations that our country has,” he noted.
However, he stressed that it should not be seen in a negative perspective. “It’s good because in general terms Mexico is no longer sold as a cheap country, it is sold as a country of quality tourism,” he said.
“The part we have to applaud is that we see an economy that is getting stronger,” he commented.
